The fruit is oblate rather than spherical. Mandarin oranges are very sweet, usually eaten plain or in fruit salads.

The dried peel of fully matured ripen fruits of mandarin orange has been used in Asia for more than 1000 years as a natural remedy to relieve cough and dissolve phlegm.
Modern scientific studies demonstrate that extract of aged mandarin orange peel has pharmaceutical
effects such as anti-inflammatory, anti-asthmatic, and anti-fungal effects.
Clinically patients with chronic bronchitis characterized by severe coughing at night were treated a herbal
decoction containing extract of mandarin orange peel with good success (Zhejiang Journal of Chinese
Medicine 1985 1:18).

The antiproliferative effects of Citrus reticulata Blanco (CR) extract, the immature tangerine peel, on human gastric cancer cell line SNU-668 were evaluated using 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide assay, 4,6-diamidineo-2-phenylindole staining, terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase-mediated dUTP nick end labeling assay, reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction expressions of BCL-2, BAX and CASP-3 genes, caspase-3 activity, and immunocytochemistry of caspase-3.
