Traditional Uses of Fritillaria (Fritillaria cirrhosa)

In the West, fritillaria is most commonly regarded as an ornamental
garden plant. By contrast, it is traditionally valued as an herbal
remedy in Nepal and China, where it grows in the Gansu, Qinghai,
Sichuan, Xizang, and Yunnan provinces. Fritillaria cirrhosa, known
as chuanbeimu that gains its name as being mainly produced in the northern part of Sichuan Province of China.
The plant is hardy to zone 5, can grow to 0.45 m, and is in flower from April to May.
The bulb is about 2 cm in diameter and is edible with a bittersweet taste.
Fritillaria cirrhosa, known as chuanbeimu (from Sichuan Province of China), has a very small corm which
is considered superior, in terms of medicinal benefits.
Fritillaria is mentioned in the ancient literature, including a brief statement in the Shennong Bencao Jing
(Great Herbal of China which dates around 3000 B.C.) which laid the foundation for the study of Chinese
medicinals.
For thousands of years, fritillaria has been used in Asia to clear heat and to moisten the lung dryness,
for heat-type bronchitis with dry cough and for the heart (to calm heart fire).
Fritillaria is also used for treating lumps beneath the skin, such as scrofulous swellings and breast
lumps.
