Dr. Yang brings in unique experience in facilitating multilateral collaborations of academic institutes with governmental entities and corporate partners. Built upon the solid foundation of academic research and administration, combined with his more recent global outsourcing experience, Dr. Yang has established an extensive network of international relations crossing multiple industrial sectors, as well as in local and central government of China.
For a decade (1990-2000) Dr. Yang was a professor in the Department of Chemistry, North Carolina State University, Raleigh, and conducted research in the areas of theoretical and computational chemistry in transition metal and semi-conductor materials. Meanwhile he also played pivotal roles in coordinating China programs at NC State and in 2000 was instrumental in helping resolve some key agricultural issues prior to the U.S. House vote on the issues of establishing permanent normal trade relations with China.
From 2000 to 2006, Dr. Yang served as Director of the China Center at the University of Minnesota (UM), established and served as the director of the Mingda (UM) Institute for Leadership Training. This innovative program opened the door to senior government officials and business executives from China who joined this program to be trained in key areas of business and government management, WTO and trade issues, and human resources. The China Center also played critical roles in strengthening the tie between the State of Minnesota and China. In 2002, Dr. Yang personally brought the Governor of Minnesota and President of UM to visit China. To his tireless efforts in facilitating cultural exchange and corporate collaboration between the US and China, Dr. Yang has won numerous awards, including Twin Cities International Citizen Awards – Immigrant Achievement Award (2006); Salzburg Seminar Fellow of Session 423 “China and the Global Economy”, Schloss Leopoldskron, Salzburg, Austria (2004); Excellent Community Award from Chinese-American Friendship Association (1999), and in 2002-2003 was a CIC-ALP Fellow (Committee on Institutional Cooperation - Academic Leadership Program, a consortium of the Big-Ten universities & the University of Chicago). Dr. Yang also serves on the board of directors in the International Institute of Minnesota, US-China People’s Friendship Association-Minnesota.
In 2007 Dr. Yang became Vice President and General Manager of Asia Operations, Griffin International Companies (GIC), a global consumer electronics corporation headquartered in Minneapolis. Under Dr. Yang’s leadership GIC established its Asia operations in Shenzhen, China with over $30 million sourcing business and $300 million representative business, and streamlined the local sourcing process and import-export logistics in and out of China.
Dr. Yang received his Ph.D. in chemistry from the State University of New York at Stony Brook; and B.S. in chemistry from Chengdu University of Science & Technology, China.
