WinVivo Provides Innovative, Cost-Effective Tools to Advanced Wound Care Specialists at a National Conference

Silicon Valley, CALIFORNIA – April 26, 2012

Chronic wounds and skin ulcers account for approximately 6.5 million skin wounds in the United States and 38 million globally. With babyboomers entering the Medicare system at a rate of 10,000 persons per day in the US and the sharp rise in the incidence of diabetes and obesity worldwide, the burden of treating chronic wounds is growing rapidly due to increasing health care costs of managing these challenging medical conditions.

It is claimed that an excess of US$25 billion is spent annually on the treatment of chronic wounds, including diabetic foot ulcers, leg ulcers caused by vascular deficiency, and non-healing trauma and surgical wounds. In addition to the traditional wound care services provided at inpatient acute care hospitals, long term care facilities, home health care agencies and nursing homes, specialized and integrative outpatient wound care centers are mushrooming allover the US to meet the fast growing demand of comprehensive, highly skilled wound care services.

This year's Spring Symposium on Advanced Wound Care (SAWC) held in Atlanta on April 17-21 brought wound care specialists from clinical and academic institutions in the US and worldwide to share their research results and to discuss new technologies on improving the speed and quality of wound healing.

WinVivo made its national debut at this important forum for advanced wound care. Together with clinicians from California School of Podiatric Medicine and the UCSF Center for Limb Preservation, WinVivo presented series of clinical studies on using the WINVIVO wound ointment in the successful treatment of difficult-to-heal chronic wounds. Many of the patients in the clinical studies have had long-standing chronic wounds (diabetic foot ulcers, pressure ulcers, venous/arterial leg ulcers, and non-healing surgical/amputation wounds) that had been resistant to treatment with advanced wound care modalities such as negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT), biologics and skin substitutes. Their wound conditions are representative of the complex issues of healing chronic wounds —infection with antibiotic-resistant bacterial biofilms, malodor, excessive drainage, eschar or fibrous tissue buildup, prolonged inflammation stalling the productive wound healing process, ischemia and neuropathy due to diabetes and/or other systemic comorbidities.

At the conference, wound care specialists were very intrigued and excited by WinVivo's innovative approaches to developing highly efficacious yet cost-effective and easy-to-use natural botanical products. Many of them shared with WinVivo their daily frustration of dealing with the practical issues of stalled healing of chronic wounds due to uncontrollable edema and erythema, patient non-compliance and their complaints of maceration, pain and itch caused by some wound care agents, as well as the rapidly rising cost of managing their wounds. WinVivo is proud to be one of the pioneers to provide hopes to many patients in urgent need of wound closure in order to prevent amputation, and to contribute to reducing the healthcare burdens in the US.
