Travel Health and Safety

Many travelers would swear that they get sick after every trip or vacation, especially international trips. They wonder if it was the food, the water, the smog in the city, or the airplane ride. It turns out that airline carriers are also formidable carriers of the common cold.  Passengers may be 100 times more likely to catch a cold or get sinus infection on a plane than in their normal daily life, according to a study published in the Journal of Environmental Health Research. This may be due to the following factors:

  • Most airplanes today recirculate the air within the cabin. There was a comparison of flights with filtered and unfiltered fresh air, which actually showed that there was little observable difference -both found about a 20% incidence of common colds among passengers who fly.
  • Much increased transmission rates on an airplane.
  • Extremely low cabin humidity caused by low humidity at high elevations (most commercial airlines typically run at 10 percent or lower at an elevation range of 30,000 to 35,000 feet). At very low levels of humidity, the "natural defense system" of mucus in our noses and throats dries up and is crippled, creating a much more tolerant environment for germs to infect us.
  • Fatigue, jetlag and stress from traveling that weakened the body's immunity.

    An International Traveler's Confession

International Photographer Mark Tuschman in Peru

Mark Tuschman has worked as an international location photographer for nearly 30 years, specializing in the healthcare field. He has also worked for several NGOs promoting social progress, particularly women’s health and girls’ education. As a photographer committed to issues of global health and development, he has received numerous awards internationally, including the photographer of the year award for the Global Health Council’s annual international conference in May 2009. Mark was selected to be the featured photographer at the Pacific Health Summit (which is sponsored by the Gates Foundation, Wellcome Trust and The National Bureau of Asian Research) in London in June 2010 and held an exhibit at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.

Here he shares his experience using WinVivo's products for travel health:

I am a professional photographer and have done a great deal of international work, which, of course, involves many airplane flights. In the past, I have always been susceptible to getting respiratory or sinus infections; as a matter of fact, it would be quite unusual if I didn't, and I just accepted this as part of the price of doing my work. This April I went with Dr. Shirley Chen on a cultural expedition in China to visually document for WinVivo plant-based diet, botanical farming and processing there. Right before the trip I was offered the opportunity to use WinVivo's Botano Guard and Botano Throat to boost my immune system and avoid respiratory infections, I had to admit I was a bit skeptical. But I was later pleasantly surprised to find that these products not only kept me healthy on my trip to China ( which involved 8 separate air flights) and a subsequent trip to Europe and Africa ( which entailed a month of travel with 7 air flights). I have to say that these preventatives really work. The several times when I felt I was coming down with a cold or sinus problems, I doubled my dose and within hours the symptoms were gone.

I would not recommend these products if they had not worked for me. It was quite interesting to experience the historical basis for these products while I was in China with their philosophy of using natural herbs to treat chronic conditions and also to experience some of the modern processing techniques used to extract the beneficial essence of these plant materials. I plan on not leaving home and getting on an airplane without these preventatives.

Compromised Immunity"Your immune system is your interface with the environment. If it is healthy and doing its job right, you can interact with germs and not get infections, with allergens and not have allergic reactions, with carcinogens and not get cancer. Chronic Cough

Chronic cough is not a disease in itself; rather it is a symptom of an underlying condition. Chronic cough is a common problem and the reason for many doctor visits.

Flu/Cold

A family is a unit composed not only of children but of men, women, an occasional animal, and the common cold - Ogden Nash Every year the Center for Disease Control (CDC) expects that 5% to 20% of the population will get the flu and that 200,000 people will be hospitalized because of it. Even more than that will get a cold. Is it inevitable?
