Claimed as the “Queen of Fruits” in Thailand, mangosteen fruit and its hull (or pericarp) are rich in phytonutrients such as strong antioxidants polyphenolic xanthones. Modern research reveals that mangosteen extracts can suppress allergic reactions by inhibiting IgE-mediated histamine release from mast cells and prostaglandin E2 synthesis.

Traditional Uses of Mangosteen (Garcinia mangostana)

  • The mangosteen fruit, called the “Queen of Fruits,” is grown in Thailand,
Cambodia, Vietnam, India, Brazil, Africa, the Caribbean and the Philippines.
  • This fruit takes the shape of a tangerine and tastes refreshingly sweet with a bit
    sourness.
  • Also used as a folk medicine in Asia for centuries, knowledge of the healing properties of this plant has
been passed down from generation to generation and also passed on to early European explorers and
    settlers.
  • Mangosteen has been traditionally used as a medicinal treatment for diarrhea, skin infection, urinary
infections and wounds throughout South Asia.

Modern Research - Mangosteen (Garcinia mangostana)

  • Xanthones found in the Mangosteen, Alpha Mangostin and Gamma Mangostin, have been shown to be
naturally antibiotic, antiviral, and anti-inflammatory; and are amongst the most powerful antioxidants found in nature.
  • Mangosteen also exhibits anti-histamine and anti-inflammatory properties.
  • Scientific research indicates activity against several cancer cell lines, including breast cancer, liver cancer and leukemia.
  • Mangosteen also shows vasorelaxant properties, which may have beneficial effects on cardiovascular
diseases, including ischemic heart disease, atherosclerosis, hypertension, and thrombosis.

Articles about this botanical

Histaminergic and serotonergic receptor blocking substances from the medicinal plant Garcinia mangostana

A crude methanolic extract of the fruit hull of Mangosteen, Garcinia mangostana L. inhibited the contractions of isolated thoracic rabbit aorta induced by histamine and serotonin.

Antioxidant, free radical-scavenging activity ...

The present study provides the evidence that Garcinia mangostana extracts, especially the G. mangostana water extract, act as antioxidants and cytoprotective agents against oxidative damage, which is at least partly due to its phenolic compounds in mangosteen.

Anti-acne-inducing bacterial activity of mangosteen fruit rind extracts

The aims of this study were to determine the most effective solvent extract of mangosteen, anti-acne- inducing bacterial activity and the amount of alpha-mangostin, a major active component in each mangosteen fruit rind extract, using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC).
