As a key ingredient included in our product Botano Throat™, Momordica grosvenori, also known as Siraitia grosvenorii, is an herbaceous perennia vine native to Southern China and Northern Thailand and best known for its fruit, the luo han guo (which means Buddha fruit in Chinese), one of several that have been called longevity fruit. Buddha fruit gains its name as being the fruit primarily grown in Southern China, mainly in Guangxi Province, with most of the product from the mountains of Guilin, a major Buddhist retreat area with many temples during the Tang Dynasty 1300 years ago.

Traditional Uses of Buddha Fruit (Momordica grosvenori)

  • Buddha fruit has been cooked with soups containing meat, vegetables or steeped with tea to provide a common Chinese household remedy for colds and congestion of the lungs such as cough.
  • Further, Buddha fruit and its sweetening component are often mentioned in relation to diabetes and obesity, because it can substitute for caloric sugars normally consumed in the diet.

Modern Research - Buddha Fruit (Momordica grosvenori)

  • Buddha fruit extract is nearly 300 times sweeter than sugar and has been used as a natural
sweetener in China for nearly a millennium due to its flavor and low calorie (2.3 kcal/g (9.6 kJ/g)).
  • Recent work on Buddha fruit includes investigation of the antioxidant activity of the mogrosides
and their potential use as cancer prevention compounds. This suggested effect is based on the
understanding that antioxidants can produce significant reversal or suppression of the early
    stage of cancer development.
  • In China most of these fields of cultivated Buddha fruit plants are in Yongfu and Lingui Counties
(near Guilin, Guangxi Province) which are recognized in China as sites having an unusually high number of residents living to an age 100 years or more, which some attribute to the
consumption of this fruit, as well as the pristine environment.

Upon evaluation of compounds 1-8 for inhibitory effects against the Epstein-Barr virus early antigen (EBV-EA) activation induced by 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate (TPA), all compounds exhibited inhibitory effects with IC50 values of 346-400 mol ratio/32 pmol TPA.
