Broad-Spectrum Allergies

"People are taking two, three, sometimes four different medications at a time to relieve their symptoms quickly and effectively because they are increasingly unsatisfied with their allergy medications. This can be a very costly, dangerous and frequently ineffective solution to treating bothersome symptoms,"
- Dr. Alpen Patel, a medical-scientific council member of the Asthma and Allergy Association of America.

In industrialized countries, allergies affect approximately 20% of the population, including 10%-30% of all adults and up to 40% of children. Worldwide, there is an alarming trend towards higher rates of IgE-mediated allergic diseases including:

  • Seasonal Allergies Seasonal (periodic) allergic rhinitis (outdoor allergies or hay fever) predominantly occurs during pollen seasons in the spring, summer and autumn. Ragweed, which has the longest pollen season (Aug.-Nov.), affects more people than any other allergen.
  • Year-Round Allergies Perennial (continuous) allergic rhinitis (indoor allergies) caused by pet dander, dust mites, cockroaches and indoor mold spores; have year-round impact and tend to worsen during the winter months when most indoor environments are sealed tightly.
  • Skin Allergies Skin allergies are eczema (atopic dermatitis) which is marked by itchy rashes and oozing blisters; hives (urticaria) involving swelling, redness and itching; and contact dermatitis which produces rashes and itching after touching poison ivy or certain foods.
  • Food Allergies Adverse reaction to a food or food additive that is eaten, such as dairy products, eggs, peanuts, wheat/gluten, and soy.
  • Multiple chemical sensitivity (MCS) A chronic condition characterized by symptoms of hypersensitivity to low levels of chemicals, such as smoke, pesticides, plastics, synthetic fabrics, scented products, petroleum products and paints.

Allergy is dysfunction of the immune system in a form of hypersensitivity. This hypersensitivity is often caused by an imbalance in ’T-cells‘ – specialized cells that regulate your immune system. The Th1 (T Helper 1) response of the immune system goes after harmful microorganisms that get inside our cells (cell-mediated immunity)‚ intracellular pathogens such as pathogenic viruses, yeast and certain bacteria. The other is Th2 (T Helper 2) response, the humoral or antibody-mediated immunity‚ that attacks extracellular molecules that are found outside the cells, in blood and other body fluids, such as allergens.

A healthy immune system is dynamic and balanced—able to switch back and forth as needed, quickly eradicating one threat and then resting before responding to the next. In people with allergic disease, the Th2 response of the immune system over-reacts to allergens such as pollen, gluten, etc. The trouble is: over-activation of Th2 blocks the Th1 response (which protects your body from viral, yeast and certain bacterial infection). Many viruses already harbored in your body but suppressed by your Th1 immunity are now re-activated, causing further health problems, in addition to allergic reactions.

Asian Wisdom for De-Sensitizing the Body to Broad-Spectrum Allergens:

  • Proactively suppress allergic reactions to allergens by using vegetables, tea and herbs that inhibit antibody/IgE-mediated histamine release;
  • Simultaneously strengthen the immune defense against pathogens by using immune-boosting herbs such as mushroom essence to help your body build a stronger immune defense against viral and bacterial infection; and
  • Gently de-stress the body by using antioxidant, adaptogenic botanicals to enhance oxygen intake and blood circulation, thereby accelerating elimination of toxins generated by allergic reactions.

By taking this balanced approach to the allergic attacks provoked by a wide variety of allergens, one could gradually restore a natural healthy balance to the immune system in terms of Th1/Th2 responses, allowing it to switch back and forth agilely as needed without over-reacting to benign substance or tissue.

Compromised Immunity

Compromised Immunity"Your immune system is your interface with the environment. If it is healthy and doing its job right, you can interact with germs and not get infections, with allergens and not have allergic reactions, with carcinogens and not get cancer. A healthy immune system is the cornerstone of good general health."
- Andrew Weil, M.D., in Natural Health, Natural Medicine (2004), p. 210.

Flu/Cold

A family is a unit composed not only of children but of men, women, an occasional animal, and the common cold - Ogden Nash Every year the Center for Disease Control (CDC) expects that 5% to 20% of the population will get the flu and that 200,000 people will be hospitalized because of it. Even more than that will get a cold. Is it inevitable?

Eczema

Eczema is a dermatological condition that affects millions of people around the world; and in the US 1 in 8 people suffers from eczema. The common symptoms of this skin condition (medically categorized under dermatitis) are inflammation, redness, itching and dryness of the skin. Excessive itching gives the skin a scaly appearance with a
leathery texture due to thickening of the skin layers, often on hands, feet, joints, and
the neck.
