Anurag Mairal, Ph.D., MBA – Strategist in Biomedical R&D Global Partnership

Dr. Mairal is the Director of Stanford University's Global Biodesign Exchange Programs, the Associate Director of Stanford-India Biodesign program, as well as Senior Advisor to Singapore-Stanford Biodesign Director. In these roles, Dr. Mairal is responsible for developing an extensive global network of partners from the industry, academia, regulatory bodies, and investors in Asia and in the US. In addition, Dr. Mairal is a serial entrepreneur. He is currently Executive Vice President at Orbees Medical, a new venture that he co-founded and that provides consulting services to the medical device industry in the U.S. and Europe and market development services in India. The venture relies heavily on highly trained clinicians and qualified vendors in India, Singapore, and China. Dr. Mairal advises a number of startups in the San Francisco Bay Area and serves on the boards of six for-profit and non-profit organizations.

Prior to this, Dr. Mairal was a Product Director at Cordis and a Development Director, Business Development at Nitinol Devices and Components, both Johnson & Johnson companies. Before joining J&J, Dr. Mairal was the lead partner for the life sciences practice of Market Potential, a consulting firm focused on early stage companies. Earlier, he was a Group Leader and a Process Development Manager at Membrane Technology and Research (MTR). At MTR, Dr. Mairal was responsible for fundraising, business development, strategic alliances, and product development in the Bioseparations area.

Dr. Mairal has received a Bachelor of Engineering degree from Ravishankar University, Raipur; a Master of Technology degree from the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay; and a Ph.D. from the University of Colorado at Boulder, where he pursued graduate research in membrane separations. Dr. Mairal was also a post-doctoral fellow at the University of Twente, Netherlands and at University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. Dr. Mairal has an MBA from the Haas School of Business at University of California, Berkeley. At Haas, he was a founding co-Chairman of the South Asia Business Conference and Chair of the Biotech Panel for the Asia Business Conference. Dr. Mairal is also a co-founder and a volunteer at South Asian MBA Association (SAMBAA), a global network of MBAs with interest in South Asia. Dr. Mairal has over 20 publications and 7 issued patents.
